MDT Getting started

Preface

All of the information in this collection is readily available online  I do not aim to add anything new to the conversation, only to clear out some of the noise and answer some of the questions i see going unanswered on the topic daily.

Requirements

  • AD DS
  • DHCP, can be on the same server as WDS but I don't cover it in this guide
  • DNS
  • Windows Server 2016 or newer(will work in Windows 10 or newer a well)
  • Non-system NTFS volume
  • A local admin account on server
  • Windows ADK with the WinPE add-in

Windows ADK installation

  1. Download Latest ADK from here You can use the Windows 11 ADK for Windows 10 as well.
Download the ADK for Windows 11, version 22H2
  1. Launch the installer and accept the default install location.
  1. Skip through installation accepting defaults until you get to the screen in the step below.
  1. Select these functions and click Install.
  1. Close the installation when it is done.
  1. Download the Windows PE add-on for Windows ADK Here

  1. Launch the ADK installer
  1. Choose the default install location.
  1. Check the box next to the feature listed on he left then click install.
  1. Close this install then continue to Microsoft Deployment Toolkit install.
